Breath Awareness

Try this, for the next sixty seconds, do nothing except notice your breath.

Not changing it. Not deepening it. Just noticing. Where does it go first, your chest or your belly? Does it feel shallow today or full? Are you holding your breath anywhere without realising it? Is the out breath as long as the in breath, or does it feel shorter?

This is the foundation of everything we do in Pilates. Before any exercise, before any stretch, there is breath. Because when you become aware of how you are breathing, you start to understand a great deal about how your body is holding itself, and how it is feeling.

Most of us spend the majority of the day barely breathing at all, in the physiological sense. Shallow, chest-led breathing keeps the nervous system slightly on edge. A fuller breath, even just occasionally, tells the body it is safe to settle.

Take a moment for it today. You have time. 💜

How does your breath feel this Sunday? 👇
